Worship Worship is the central and most important act of the Christian community. In worship, we sing God's praise, listen for God's word, receive God's gifts in baptism and the Eucharist, and respond in the dedictaion of our lives with the confidence that god's Spirit equips us for ministry.
Each Sunday morning, we gather at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel and at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary for the worship of God. Worship services are dialogues between the congregation and God. In scripture, sermon and silence we listen for the word of God; in prayers -- spoken and sung -- we respond.
The congregation is led in worship by the pastors, liturgists, elders and musicians. Holy Communion is offered each week at the 8:30 a.m. "Service of the Lord's Day" and on the first Sunday of each month in the 11:00 a.m. "Sunday Celebration."
On the third Sunday evening of each month, our Eventide service, held in the chapel, at 7:30 p.m., offers worshippers a chance to "come and find the quiet center from the crowded lives we lead" through scripture, music in the Taize tradition, silence, communion and prayers for wholeness and healing.
Faith and the Arts The Arts are of great importance at First Presbyterian Church. When we participate in the arts in worship, we offer our whole selves -- head and heart, mind and soul -- to God. As we create, we emulate the Creator. We offer our gift to the Giver of all gifts.
We also endeavor to open our doors to the community -- inviting performances that inspire, uplife and edify the human spirit. First Presbyterian is blessed with a wonderfully talented choir and organist who, together with the Director of Music and Arts, lead our congregation in a full expression of worship to God.
Vocal choirs are offered for all ages, from kindergarten - adult.
- Chancel Choir (adults and interested youth)
- Youth Group Choir (grades 6-12)
- Carol Choir (grades 3-5)
- Seraph Choir (grades 1-2)
- Cherub Choir (ages 4 & 5)
Instrumentalists are provided regular opportunities for participation in worship leadership and are encouraged to make their talents known to Marlon Hurst, Director of Music and Arts.
The American Spiritual Ensemble also calls First Presbyterian Church home. Under the direction of Dr. Everett McCorvey, Professor of Vocal Performance and Director of Opera at the University of Kentucky, this group of wonderfully talented individuals from all over North America assembles at FPC intermittently throughout the year to prepare for concerts. While here, they participate in worship and use our facilities for open rehearsals.
In addition to the music that is presented in the worship services of First Presbyterian Church, we offer a series of artistic events entitled Faith and the Arts. We seek to honor God through the celebration of creativity.
In celebration of the visual arts, the church is a participant in the LexArts sponsored Gallery Hop. A variety of concerts and recitals are regularly offered in both the Sanctuary and Chapel. Please see the Faith and the Arts webpage for more details.
