Walking the Bible offers new insights into the roots of our common faith and uncovers fresh answers to the most profound questions of the human spirit. Discussion is led by Dave Bowman, Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Kentucky, and Jay Bright, Chair of the World Languages/ESL department at Henry Clay High School. This class meets in the Dining Room.
September 30 - October 7 The Search for Healing in an Agonizing Story: Abraham & Isaac on Mt. Moriah
What does the Lord require of us? Dr. Laurence Kant, Associate Professor of the History of Religion at Lexington Theological Seminary, will help us struggle with this question as we explore one of the most unsettling narratives in the Bible: the near sacrifice by Abraham of his son, Isaac, as recorded in Genesis 22.
October 14 - November 4 Peter & Paul and the Christian Revolution
Two thousand years ago, in the Roman province of Judea, Jesus was crucified by imperial troops. Thousands before him had suffered the same fate, but unlike his predecessors, Jesus did not disappear from history.
After his death, the early followers of Jesus faced powerful obstacles. The might of the Roman Empire coupled with the politics of ancient Jerusalem lay a heavy burden on those who believed in Jesus. But the new faith would not die.
Using the words of Paul and other ancient writers, we will view dramatic reenactments and hear interviews with contemporary scholars exploring how two men led one of history's most astonishig religious movements.
November11 - November 18 The Changing Fourth Estate: Upheaval in the News Media
Our own John Carroll, forner editor of the Lexington Herald-Leader, The Baltimore Sun and The Los Angeles Times, will be with us for two weeks. On the 11th, he will talk about how the upheaval in the news business is changing what America knows. The second week he will look at new pressures on the ethics of journalism.
December 2 - December 23 People, Get Ready!
No, this is not a reprise of the Curtis Mayfield song - it's the season of Advent! Advent is a word that means "to come, to show up," and in the chaos of the shopping and party frenzy, we Christians try to pull the shutters down on all that and do some soul searching, some praying, some repenting. Company is coming, and it's a baby - and not just any baby, but Mary's child, the Savior of the world. The question of Advent is "Will there be room?" Can we sweep out the clutter of our lives and leave a space into which God might become reality? Join the Forum Class as we explore repentance, faith, holiness, and love during these four weeks. Larry Durr, a retired Presbyterian pastor who worships with this congregation, will facilitate.
