Faith and the Arts Program Series 2006-2007
First Church offers myriad opportunities for you to "Discover the Spirit of Creativity!" With our Faith & The Arts series of programs, you can explore religion, faith and God through the visual arts and music events.
The Worship and Arts Ministry Team is very pleased to announce our Faith & the Arts program series for 2006-2007.
LexArts' Gallery Hop
Our Gallery will once again participate in the LexArts' Gallery Hop. Our season of exhibits will be:
August - September Appalachian artist Jeff Chapman-Crane will exhibit a selection of his paintings reflecting the Appalachian experience. For more information about Mr. Chapman-Crane and his work, visit his website.
October - November CONNECTIONS: We Are All One We will exhibit artwork from the Kentucky Chapter of the Society of Layerists in Multimedia as a part of the multi-venue, multi-faith CONNECTIONS exhibit.
January - February
We will feature an exhibit of woodcarvings and bas-relief by Lexington artist, LaVon Williams. The exhibit features 12 of Mr. Williams' works depicting the lives and history of African-Americans. The works are collected from the earliest of Mr. Williams' carvings to new pieces that are being exhibited for the first time.
Winner of the 2006 Governor's Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, LaVon Williams' work has been widely exhibited at the Outsider Art Fair, New York; the National Black Fine Arts Exposition, Chicago; the Kentucky Folk Art Center, Morehead, Kentucky; the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, Wilberforce, Ohio and the Keny Gallery in Columbus, Ohio. His carvings have been acquired by prominent private collectors throughout the nation.
A reception will be held during the LexArts Gallery Hop on February 16 from 5-8 p.m. to honor LaVon Williams and celebrate his receipt of the 2006 Governor's Award.
March - April
Artwork from students participating in the University of Kentucky's Donovan Scholars Program will be on display. We will be an auxiliary gallery to the main exhibit located at Art at the Cathedral.
April - May
Retrospective of the work of FPC architect Cincinnatus Shryock. The exhibit will examine Shryock's work within a historical and regional context. Particular emphasis will be given to the FPC sanctuary.

Music Events include:
December 10: Lessons & Carols, 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. Our traditional service filled with readings of Old Testament prophesy, New Testament fulfillments and beautiful music that celebrates the glory of this holy season. Features Chancel, Youth and Children's Choirs. Free.
December 17: A Christmas Concert - Carols & Classics, 7:30 p.m. The FPC Chancel Choir and soloists will present Christmas Oratorio by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns as the featured work on this holiday concert. The concert will also feature the FPC Chamber Choir singing selected pieces, and a congregational carol-sing. Strings, harp and organ will accompany the music of the eveing.
December 24: Christmas Eve at First Presbyterian Church Join us for one or more of our four services on Christmas Eve. The 10:00 a.m. service will celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The birth of Jesus will be celebrated at the 3:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m. services (traditional liturgy) and at the 10:00 p.m. service. The music of the 10:00 p.m. service will be accompanied by a jazz quartet.
February 21: The American Spiritual Ensemble.
This beloved choir, under the direction of Dr. Everett McCorvey, will sing a concert at First Presbyterian Church. Tickets are available through the Downtown Arts Center box office. The box office is located at 141 E. Main St. (directly across the street from the downtown Lexington Public Library). You may also charge tickets by phone at 225-0370. Tickets may also be purchased on Sunday mornings at First Presbyterian Church.
April 5: A Multimedia Passion Service. 7:30 p.m.
The last hours of the life of Jesus recounted through instrumental and choral music, and visual arts.
April 29: Sanctuary and Organ Dedication Service Come celebrate with us as we dedicate our newly renovated Sanctuary and organ to the Glory of God. We will celebrate with a festival of congregational hymns, choral anthems and organ music. The service will feature the FPC Chancel Choir, brass quintet, percussion and renowned organist Dr. John Schwandt, associate professor of organ and director of the American Organ Institute at the University of Oklahoma. 4:30 p.m., Sanctuary.
