2004-2005 Faith and the Arts Program Series 
First Church offers myriad opportunities for you to "Discover the Spirit of Creativity!" With our Faith & The Arts series of programs, you can explore religion, faith and God through the visual arts and music events.

No fewer than 13 programs are offered in this church year -- plus, we may add a few surprises along the way. Check back often for updates. The programs are outlined below.

November 2004

November 19 -- December 19:  Lee Thomas, photographer.
Lexington photographer Lee Thomas brings 11 of his black and white portraits of nuns from the world-renowned "Nun's Study," a research project about aging and Alzheimer's Disease based at the University of Kentucky's Sanders-Brown Institute.  Works of art from participants in the Alzheimer's Association's Best Friends Day Care program will be shown in conjunction with Thomas's work.

LexArts' Gallery Hop opening: Nov. 19th from 5 p.m. until
9 p.m. Works on display during regular church hours.  Free.

December 2004

December 11:  Messiah Sing-a-Long.  7 p.m.
For the third year in a row, Lexingtonians get a rare chance to participate in (rather than to just listen to) Handel's most noted work: Messiah. Guest conductors lead professional soloists and the audience (which also is the chorus) through a piece that has become a Christmas tradition around the world.

December 12:  Lessons and Carols.  8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Our traditional service filled with readings of Old Testament prophesy, New Testament fulfillments and beautiful music that celebrates the glory of this holy season. Features Chancel, Youth and Children's Choirs.  Free.

December 19:  "Shepherds & Sages."  5:30 p.m.
The Chancel Choir and soloists will present a concert of Christmas music from the Baroque period.  Congregational Christmas carols will be interspersed between the works by composers Hammerschmidt, Schelle & Kuhnau.  Both choir and congregation will be accompanied by a 13-piece string orchestra.  Come and bring friends to this concert that officially begins Christmas week!  Free.

December 24:  Christmas Eve Candelight Services.  5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Our Christmas Eve Candelight service will fill your heart with Christmas spirit -- just when you need it most! Scripture readings, choral music, Holy Communion and candelight make this a most memorable experience every year.  Free.

January 2005

January 20 -- February 18:  Various Southern Artists
A collection of Southern artists will participate in "Thresholds -- Lexington: Expressions of Art & Spiritual Life," a traveling show that is touring the state. This exhibit of visual art will hang in our gallery and will open with a city-wide progressive dinner on January 20. The show will close after the Lexington Arts and Cultural Council's Gallery Hop on Friday, February 18.  Sponsored in part by the Kentucky Arts Council.

February 2005

February 14: Jitro Czech Children's Choir in concert. 7 p.m.     (View our poster)

Lexington is given a special Valentine's Day gift of a rare Central Kentucky appearance by the world-renowned Jitro. Jitro, from Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic, is an organization of 500 children in seven preparatory ensembles, of which only the top 25-30 singers qualify to tour.

Their concert repertoire is varied between sacred music, Czech folk music and familiar American standards.  You will be amazed by their musicality, inspired by their enthusiasm and enriched by their performance.

February 23:  "Mark's Gospel LIVE" performance. 6:30 p.m.
Spend an energetic two hours as actor and priest, Father Joseph Morris,
presents "Mark's Gospel LIVE," a first-centruy drama of love, betrayal and
the newness of life!  These are the actual words from The Gospel of St.
Mark
which Father Morris has memorized and performs as a one-man
play.  Admission:  Free-will offering.

March 2005

March 20 -- April 15:  Penny Sisto, fabric artist
Internationally known fabric artist Penny Sisto describes herself as an artist who "uses her talent to promote social justice and our common humanity." Her quilt art has been created in response to the plight of oppressed people - women, children and minorities.  Learn more about Ms. Sisto at http://www.pennysisto.com.
Gallery Hop, Friday, April 15, 5--8 p.m.

March 24:  Choral Tenebrae.  7:30 p.m.
Jesus' last supper and crucifixion are commemorated in this solemn service of scripture readings and sung responses. Holy Communion is served. Features the Chancel Choir, soloists and instrumentalists. Free.

May 15 -- June 19:  First Church Members' Art Expo
First Church members share their creative spirit through the display of art work, photography and other visual art media. Free.
